Ahead of Federal Tax Deadline, Pappas Hosts Tax Filing Roundtable
The IRS’s free Direct File pilot program provides a free tax filing system to most Granite Staters
Ahead of the April 15th deadline for federal income tax filing, Congressman Chris Pappas (NH-01) joined local Internal Revenue Service (IRS) officials for a roundtable conversation on useful tax filing resources as Granite Staters file their taxes, including information about the IRS’s free Direct File pilot program.
“The IRS’s new Direct File program is providing free, easy, and secure tax filing for individuals in New Hampshire and eleven other states this tax season,” said Congressman Pappas. “I helped pass the Inflation Reduction Act which made significant investments into the IRS, including modernized IT infrastructure, better customer service, and resources for the study that led to this free direct filing system. I was glad to join these local tax experts today to discuss the Direct File program and other resources available to help Granite Staters file their taxes in a timely and efficient manner.”
The Inflation Reduction Act, which Congressman Pappas supported and helped pass, directed the IRS to conduct a cost and feasibility study about a direct filing system. The study was released in May 2023, after which the IRS moved forward with the Direct File pilot program. In February, the program was made available to government employees in twelve states, including New Hampshire. Last month, it was opened further to qualifying individuals within the same states.
