As Supreme Court Hears Mifepristone Case, Pappas Renews Support for Reproductive Freedom

March 26, 2024

Today, Congressman Chris Pappas (NH-01) reiterated his support for reproductive freedom as the U.S. Supreme Court begins hearing oral arguments in FDA v. Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine, which is challenging the FDA’s approval of mifepristone, the first drug used in the two-drug medication abortion protocol.

“We cannot allow radical politicians and judges to turn back the clock on women's rights, and I remain committed to doing all I can to restore and defend the right to safe and legal abortion and access to reproductive health care for all Americans,” said Congressman Pappas. “This has the potential to set a dangerous precedent that ignores science and could unleash attacks on other life-saving drugs. As this case is heard by the Supreme Court, I will never stop fighting to ensure every American can make their own decisions about their bodies, their health care, their lives, and their futures.”

Pappas is a co-sponsor of the Protecting Reproductive Freedom Act, which reaffirms the FDA’s authority to approve medication abortion and safeguards health care providers’ ability to prescribe medication abortion via telehealth. Last year, prior to FDA v. Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine reaching the Supreme Court, Pappas joined a bicameral amicus brief urging the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit to block the ruling.

Pappas has fought to pass the Women’s Health Protection Act, which would enshrine into law vital protections previously guaranteed by Roe v. Wade and restore the right to reproductive care for everyone across America, and signed a discharge petition to bring the legislation to the House floor for a vote in the 118th Congress.

Pappas is also fighting to pass the Right to Contraception Act, which would codify and strengthen the right for individuals to get and use contraception, the My Body My Data Act, which protects personal reproductive health data, and the Protecting Reproductive Freedom Act, which reaffirms the FDA’s authority to approve medication abortion and safeguards health care provider’s ability to prescribe medication abortion via telehealth.
