Pappas: Congress Should Stay in Washington and Do Our Job
With less than two weeks until the U.S. government runs out of funding, and after House Speaker Kevin McCarthy sent members home without passing legislation to keep the government open, Congressman Chris Pappas (NH-01) urged House leadership to stay in Washington and pass a bipartisan agreement to keep our government open and functioning for Granite State families and small businesses.
“Congress shouldn’t leave town when there is still work left to do. We need to stay and do our jobs,” said Congressman Pappas. “It’s incredibly irresponsible for Speaker McCarthy to send members of Congress home without passing legislation to avoid a catastrophic government shutdown. I continue to urge the Speaker to bring bipartisan bills to the floor to fund our government, safeguard our economy, and ensure the health and well-being of all Granite Staters.”
Pappas has joined 97 House colleagues calling on House Speaker Kevin McCarthy to advance bipartisan government funding bills consistent with the agreement to avoid default that Congress approved earlier this year.
House Republicans have proposed a partisan stopgap bill that has no chance of becoming law and would cut $19 million in New Hampshire LIHEAP funding, slash job training, gut housing assistance, and would result in 800 fewer border patrol officers and 4,000 fewer FBI personnel, including agents who investigate crimes.
