Pappas Cosponsors Legislation to Protect Abortion Rights

April 14, 2023

Congressman Chris Pappas (NH-01) continues to take action to protect women’s rights and reproductive freedom, cosponsoring the Women’s Health Protection Act and the Protecting Reproductive Freedom Act.

“We cannot allow radical politicians and judges to turn back the clock on women's rights, and I remain committed to doing all I can to restore and defend the right to safe and legal abortion and access to reproductive health care for all Americans,” said Congressman Pappas. “The rulings we have seen this past week set a dangerous precedent that ignores the science and could unleash attacks on other life-saving drugs. As this ruling goes to the Supreme Court, I will never stop fighting to ensure every American can make their own decisions about their bodies, their health care, their lives, and their futures.”

The Women’s Health Protection Act would enshrine into law vital protections previously guaranteed by Roe v. Wade and secure the right to reproductive care for everyone across America.

The Protecting Reproductive Freedom Act reaffirms the FDA’s authority to approve medication abortion and safeguards health care providers’ ability to prescribe medication abortion via telehealth. In response to a ruling by a federal district court judge in Texas to suspend the FDA’s approval of mifepristone, the first drug used in the two-drug medication abortion protocol, Pappas also joined a bicameral amicus brief urging the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit to block the ruling.

Pappas has previously helped pass the Women’s Health Protection Act through the House, and has continually advocated for resources to support New Hampshire family planning services and health providers in the face of both state and federal efforts to defund these providers.
