Pappas Helps Pass Bipartisan Legislation to Suspend Normal Trade Relations with Russia, Ban Russian Energy Imports

April 7, 2022

Today, Congressman Chris Pappas (NH-01)helped pass bipartisan legislation to revoke free trade privileges from Russia, ban Russian energy imports, and extend U.S. sanctions against violators of human rights and corrupt actors.

"Every freedom loving nation should be taking every step possible to support Ukraine and punish Putin for his murderous invasion of his sovereign neighbor. The United States must continue to find ways to punish Russia and stop its ability to continue this invasion," said Congressman Chris Pappas. "Suspending trade relations with Russia and banning the import of Russian energy sends a clear message that we will continue to hold Putin accountable and further isolate Russia for its invasion of Ukraine."

Pappas previously helped introduce bipartisan legislation that would ban Russian oil imports to hold Putin accountable for his invasion of Ukraine and further deprive his regime of the resources necessary to wage his illegal invasion; and voted to pass legislation in the House to ban the importation of Russian oil and other forms of energy into the United States, review Russia's access to the World Trade Organization, and reauthorize and strengthen the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act.

Following price spikes as a result of Russia's Ukraine invasion, Pappas has repeatedly called on the Administration to use every tool available to cut energy costs and bolster supplies, including releasing additional barrels from our strategic reserves, encouraging lease holders to fully utilize existing permits, holding oil companies accountable, and suspending the gas tax to give Granite State families relief.
