Pappas Highlights NH Priorities to Secretary Buttigieg in Hearing

March 26, 2021

Yesterday Congressman Chris Pappas, a member of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, questioned Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg at his first hearing before the full Committee on top New Hampshire infrastructure priorities.

In this hearing, Congressman Pappas pressed Secretary Buttigieg on the Agency's commitment to supporting the Capitol Corridor Project, which would expand regional economic opportunities by better connecting communities between Boston, MA and Concord through rail.

Pappas also questioned the Secretary on the DOT's dedication to expanding active-transportation routes including trails, sidewalks, and bikeways that support the health and economic growth of our communities. Last Congress, Pappas introduced the Connecting America's Active Transportation System Act. This legislation provides $500 million in funding for a federal grant program to help build connected active-transportation routes including trails, sidewalks, and bikeways that support the health and economic growth of our communities.

In response to Pappas's question about active transportation, Secretary Buttigieg thanked Rep. Pappas for his efforts in this area, and said he would welcome ways to incorporate active transportation priorities, like Rep. Pappas's bill, into forthcoming legislation.

Prior to speaking with the Secretary, Pappas released his New Hampshire Infrastructure Roadmap in February, a bold list of priorities that he will push for in the 117th Congress.

Last Congress, Pappas also helped craft and pass the Moving Forward Act, an infrastructure package that would invest more than $1.3 billion in New Hampshire's infrastructure. With $1.2 billion for road projects and an estimated $130 million for transit, that legislation represented more than a 30% increase in federal funding for New Hampshire.
