Pappas Introduces Taiwan Peace Through Strength Act

July 28, 2023

Today Congressman Chris Pappas (NH-01), alongside Congressman Jim Banks (IN-03), introduced the bipartisan Taiwan Peace Through Strength Act to reinforce our nation’s support of Taiwan as the island faces the increased threat of a Chinese Communist Party military attack. Senator Marco Rubio (FL) introduced the Senate version of the bill.

“As Taiwan continues to face threats to its security and sovereignty, the United States must reaffirm our support for and long-term cooperation with Taiwan,” said Congressman Pappas. “This legislation would prioritize Taiwan’s resiliency in the face of potential conflicts and expedite the delivery of much-needed resources to ensure they have the capability to defend themselves effectively.”

“I’m proud to be leading this bipartisan effort with Senator Rubio to bolster Taiwan’s defenses. Chairman Xi’s extreme rhetoric makes it clear that lawmakers in Washington must act now to deter a Chinese invasion,” said Congressman Banks.

“Tensions continue to rise as the CCP actively carries out aggressive military actions near Taiwan. At a time when the island faces the ever-growing threat of Beijing’s military aggression, I’m proud to introduce this bill, which would increase the level of critical technologies provided to Taiwan by fast-tracking the transfer of capabilities and increasing joint training and planning between the U.S. and our strong ally in the Indo-Pacific, as well as stand up a critical munitions fund for Taiwan and backfill stockpiles of key weapons. Make no mistake: deterring an invasion of Taiwan must be our top priority,” said Senator Rubio.

The Taiwan Peace Through Strength Act would strengthen U.S.-Taiwan defense ties through:

  • Expediting and prioritizing U.S. military sales to Taiwan;
  • Clarifies U.S. authorities to arm Taiwan in the Taiwan Relations Act;
  • Establishing regular combined U.S.-Taiwan exercises, training, and professional exchanges;
  • Establishing a Taiwan Critical Munitions Acquisition Fund, and;
  • Applying Ukraine munitions production capacity authorities to Taiwan.
