Pappas Slams House GOP Plan to Cut Social Security and Medicare, Increase Prescription Drug Costs
The budget proposal, endorsed by nearly 80% of House Republicans, would make draconian cuts to vital services and raise the Social Security retirement age while giving tax breaks to the ultra-wealthy.
Congressman Chris Pappas (NH-01) strongly opposes the Republican-led budget proposal released yesterday, which would raise the Social Security retirement age, cut Social Security and Medicare benefits, roll back savings on prescription drugs, and repeal $35 insulin for those on Medicare.
“Granite State seniors who have paid into Social Security and Medicare need to know that their earned benefits will be there for them when they retire and not ripped away to pay for tax breaks for billionaires,” said Congressman Chris Pappas. “The budget proposal endorsed by nearly 80% of House Republicans would do just that as well as cut Medicare, weaken the Affordable Care Act for tens of thousands of Granite Staters, raise the retirement age, and roll back cost savings on prescription drugs for seniors and people on Medicare. This plan would take money out of the pockets of New Hampshire seniors and retirees and give it to the pharmaceutical industry and the ultra-wealthy. That is backward, that is wrong, and that is something I will never support. I remain committed to fighting to strengthen Social Security and Medicare and lowering the cost of health care and prescription drugs for all Granite Staters.”
Congressman Pappas fought to pass historic legislation that finally allowed the government to negotiate for lower drug prices with pharmaceutical companies, limited the cost of insulin at $35, and capped out-of-pocket medical expenses for those on Medicare.
