Pappas Statement on Trump Administration Halting Funding for Global HIV/AIDS Treatment

January 28, 2025

Today Congressman Chris Pappas released the following statement regarding the Trump Administration’s funding freeze of the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, or PEPFAR. A widely bipartisan program started by President George W. Bush, PEPFAR has supported antiretroviral treatment for nearly 20.5 million people.

“PEPFAR has provided lifesaving HIV/AIDS treatment for 20 million people over the last two decades. Stopping this program would have disastrous, deadly consequences for people across the globe, and I urge President Trump to reverse this decision and continue providing funding for HIV/AIDS treatment. Halting this program, which has wide, bipartisan support, is cruel and irresponsible.”
