Pappas Supports Bipartisan Resolution Urging the Use of 25th Amendment

January 12, 2021

Tonight, Congressman Chris Pappas (NH-01) released the following statement after voting for H. Res. 21, a bipartisan resolution calling on Vice President Mike Pence to initiate the process outlined under the 25th amendment and assume the powers of the Acting President:

"Tonight I joined 221 of my colleagues in supporting a bipartisan resolution urging Vice President Pence to initiate the process outlined in the 25th Amendment and assume power as Acting President for the remainder of President Trump's term," said Congressman Pappas. "By inciting the deadly mob that attacked the U.S. Capitol, leading to the deaths of two US. Capitol Police officers, President Trump has demonstrated that he is unable to responsibly discharge the duties of his office. He has failed the fundamental job of an American President: to protect and defend the Constitution."

"This is an opportunity for Vice President Pence and members of the Cabinet to do what is right to ensure a peaceful transition of power and avoid further chaos. I am eager for Congress to return to our work on delivering additional COVID-19 relief, rebuilding our economy, bolstering our vaccine distribution efforts, and much more. We can only effectively address these key priorities if we act to hold this dangerous President accountable and defend the pillars of our democracy."

Background:

H. Res. 21 calls upon Vice President Michael Pence to immediately use his powers under section 4 of the 25th Amendment to convene and mobilize the cabinet to declare that the President is unable to successfully discharge the duties and powers of his office. It also calls on them to transmit to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House notice that the Vice-President will be immediately assuming the powers and duties of the office as Acting President.
