Pappas Tours Portsmouth Housing Authority

May 10, 2024

This week the New Hampshire delegation welcomed more than $30 million to tackle housing affordability with almost $10 million for public housing

Today Congressman Chris Pappas (NH-01) visited Portsmouth Housing Authority’s Feaster Apartments to discuss the federal support available to increase the amount of affordable housing in New Hampshire’s Seacoast, improve and modernize New Hampshire’s public housing stock, and lower costs for families through increased energy efficiency.

Earlier this week, Pappas helped announce over $30 million in federal funding coming to New Hampshire to help address the state’s housing affordability crisis. This included $9,971,896 in Public Housing Repair grant funding to improve and modernize public housing stock in the Granite State, specifically $1,242,914 for the Portsmouth Housing Authority.

“Addressing New Hampshire’s housing challenges requires an all-hands-on-deck approach, so it’s critical we work together across all levels of government and listen to the needs of local communities,” said Congressman Pappas. “Today I toured apartments with the Portsmouth Housing Authority which are providing safe and affordable housing options to low-income families. I’ll continue to support resources that grow our affordable housing supply and ensure Granite Staters have a roof over their head and a safe place to sleep.”

“It was a pleasure to show Congressman Pappas how federal funding contributes to the upgrades to our older properties by making them more energy efficient and improving accessibility for seniors so they are able to age in place for as long as possible. Our New Hampshire Congressional Delegation understands how the affordable housing crisis negatively impacts our communities. It’s critical that we work together to increase the stock of housing for our workforce, in addition to modernizing our older properties,” said Craig W. Welch, Executive Director of Portsmouth Housing Authority & PHA Housing Development LTD.

Portsmouth Housing Authority (PHA) was created 71 years ago to develop and manage affordable housing. PHA currently has a waiting list of over 1,300 households for its 13 properties.
