Pappas Votes to Help Restore Order at the Border

February 2, 2024

This week, Congressman Chris Pappas (NH-01) voted to pass legislation to strengthen deportation standards for foreign nationals who violate the law. These four bills passed the House with bipartisan support.

“It’s past time for us to work together to take action to address our broken immigration system and restore order at our border,” said Congressman Pappas. “These bills will improve border security, strengthen efforts to deny entry to and deport foreign nationals who violate our laws, and support border patrol personnel. But we must do much more to restore order and fix our broken immigration system in a comprehensive manner - I continue to urge House leadership to work across the aisle to advance a bipartisan border bill that addresses the root causes to re-establish order at the border, stop the flow of fentanyl and other illicit substances, and keep our communities safe.”

The Consequences for Social Security Fraud Act would make foreign nationals inadmissible to the United States and deportable if they admit to or are convicted of Social Security fraud and other identification document fraud.

The No Immigration Benefits for Hamas Terrorists Act denies immigration benefits to non-U.S. Nationals who are officers, officials, representatives, spokesmen, or members of Hamas or Palestinian Islamic Jihad. This would prevent them from seeking asylum or protection from deportation.

The Agent Raul Gonzalaz Officer Safety Act would create a new standard for deporting any noncitizen who admits to evading border patrol while operating a motor vehicle and adds new mandatory minimum penalties when serious bodily injury or death occurs.

The Protect Our Communities from DUIs Act would make foreign nationals inadmissible to the United States and deportable if they are convicted of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Background:

Pappas is a cosponsor of the Dignity Act which is comprehensive, bipartisan legislation to address security and infrastructure challenges at the border, hire additional border patrol personnel, establish new pathways for asylum seekers, and create a path to citizenship.

In March 2023, Pappas helped introduce the Comprehensive Southern Border Strategy Act which would require the Department of Homeland Security to create a strategy to secure our Southern border and submit it to the House Committee on Homeland Security and Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs.
