VIDEO: Pappas Applauds Passage of Bipartisan Equality Act

February 25, 2021

Earlier today Pappas called for passage of the bill, which he helped introduce, on the House Floor

Today, Congressman Chris Pappas (NH-01), a co-chair of the House Equality Caucus, applauded the bipartisan passage of the Equality Act in the 117th Congress. As an original co-sponsor of this landmark legislation, Pappas also took to the House floor to call for the bill's immediate passage.

Despite significant progress in recent years, half of LGBTQ Americans still live in states without nondiscrimination protections across all areas of life. The Equality Act remedies this by amending the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to explicitly prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. This would ensure LGBTQ Americans with the same protections all other Americans enjoy in key areas of life, including employment, housing, credit, public services, and education.

"Equality is a self-evident truth. It is part of the bedrock of this nation. Yet our LGBTQ family, friends, neighbors, and colleagues don't have the same legal protections guaranteed to others," said Congressman Chris Pappas. "The passage of the Equality Act will ensure that LGBTQ Americans cannot be discriminated against under the law, and it will also send the unequivocal message to every LGBTQ American and their families that you matter."

In 2018, Rep. Pappas made history as the first openly gay person elected to represent New Hampshire in Congress.
