Pappas, Kelly Expand Their Legislation to Suspend Gas Tax and Lower Costs at the Pump
Expanded legislation would also suspend the diesel tax and the aviation fuel tax while still ensuring consumers, not corporations, receive the cost savings
Today Congressman Chris Pappas (NH-01) and U.S. Senator Mark Kelly (AZ) announced they have introduced the Consumer Fuel Prices Relief Act, which would provide federal fuel tax relief until the end of September 2027 by pausing the gas tax, the diesel tax, and the aviation fuel tax, while ensuring the benefit is immediately passed on to consumers in full. The legislation safeguards and maintains funding for roads, bridges, and gas spill remediation, and holds corporations accountable if they fail to pass along savings to individual consumers.
The legislation builds on their Gas Prices Relief Act of 2026, introduced in March, which would have suspended the federal gas tax through October 1, 2026.
“As Granite Staters continue to grapple with high costs, the last thing they need is to pay even higher prices at the pump or the store as a result of Donald Trump’s continued war in Iran,” said Congressman Pappas. “That is why I’ve continued to call for the suspension of the gas tax, to provide Americans with badly needed relief from the historic increase in gas prices we have seen over the past seven months. Expanding the pause to diesel taxes and aviation fuel will provide families with relief at the pump, when they’re picking up necessities at the store, or visiting family this holiday season. This legislation would also hold corporations accountable if they refuse to pass these savings along to individual consumers. In 2022, Congressman Pappas co-sponsored the Gas Prices Relief Act to suspend the gas tax and led the fight to hold corporations accountable for price gouging and driving up costs for New Hampshire families. In January, he introduced a package of legislation to lower energy costs for Granite Staters and keep more money in hard-working Americans' pockets.
