Following Pappas Advocacy, Biden Administration Takes Needed Action on Southern Border
The executive action contains a number of provisions Pappas fought to be put in place to address the border. Pappas helped launch a border security task force in March.
Congressman Chris Pappas (NH-01) released a statement following the Biden Administration’s announcement of a new executive order to take action on our southern border:
“I have repeatedly called for both parties to come together to pass common-sense border legislation, and it’s unacceptable that House Republicans have blocked a compromise bill that would provide for greater security at the border. I have also called on the Biden Administration to use executive action to address this problem. The new provisions announced today will help improve the situation at the border and should have come sooner. We must do more, and this cannot be the end of the conversation. Congress and the administration must continue to act by setting aside politics and focusing on solutions that will provide the resources necessary to restore order at the border and policies to fix our broken immigration system.”
Congressman Pappas has consistently pushed for a vote on bipartisan border legislation currently being blocked by congressional Republicans. Pappas has also urged the Biden Administration to take this kind of executive action as House Republican leadership refuses to act.
Background:
Pappas is a cosponsor of the Dignity Act which is comprehensive, bipartisan legislation to address security and infrastructure challenges at the border, hire additional border patrol personnel, establish new pathways for asylum seekers, and create a path to citizenship.
In March, Pappas helped launch a new border security task force to focus on the need for comprehensive, bipartisan solutions to address the border and fix the broken immigration system. Later that month, Pappas helped to pass the fiscal year 2024 government funding package, which included a $3.2 billion increase in funding for Customs and Border Patrol (CPB), providing for a record 22,000 agents, including 150 counter-fentanyl officers, and needed investments in fentanyl detection equipment.
In February, Pappas helped pass several pieces of legislation to strengthen deportation standards for foreign nationals who violate the law.
In March 2023, Pappas helped introduce the Comprehensive Southern Border Strategy Act which would require the Department of Homeland Security to create a strategy to secure our Southern border.
